A lack of quality food options during long flights has been a constant grouse of several passengers. For early morning flyers, the humble sandwich has been the bread and butter, provided by most airlines. However, Edelweiss CEO Radhika Gupta has called on airlines to consider Indian cuisine like paratha and idlis and “spare us the sandwich”.
The former Shark Tank judge, who is known to raise pressing issues on social media, asked airlines to end boxed food items like sandwiches and include healthier and tastier dishes like parathas, idlis, and dhoklas.
“I am calling for an end to airlines and makers of boxed food who serve two pieces of bread stuffed with cheese and coleslaw (veg sandwich) in the name of breakfast,” Gupta tweeted.
The Edelweiss managing director, who is famous for her tips on safely investing in mutual funds, struck a nostalgic tone when she said that “takeaway paratha rolls with leftover sabzis” made by mothers were way better than sandwiches.
“This is India, not the West. We have amazing breakfast food from across the country – paratha, idlis, dhoklas, and countless others – that are healthy, tasty, affordable and have a shelf life. Our moms make amazing takeaway paratha rolls with leftover sabzis that taste fab (fabulous),” she further tweeted.
Asking airlines to be creative, Gupta said, “Spare us the sandwich. We can do better.”
The post on x went viral, with nearly 12,000 views, as most social media users seconded her on airline food options.
“Don’t know why the bread behaves as if it’s in the middle of that desert and our mouth is the oasis it found,” one user quipped. Another commented that it was high time that airlines stepped up and served meals that “truly represent the diversity and excellence of Indian cuisine”.
Another user tweeted a photo of being served paratha and sabzi during an Air Vistara flight, saying “Indian chefs can surely a creative and a healthier twist to airlines meals”.
