The Jets and the Seahawks are two of the league’s worst teams for scoring first-quarter points. Both teams have a field goal apiece in their last three games. Gang Green also hasn’t scored a TD on its opening drive this season. That’s why the Jets must get off to a fast start to create early momentum.
Too often this season, the Jets have fallen into an early deficit. Two weeks ago, the Colts were up 13-0 before the Jets fought back, but they couldn’t come away with the win.
Aaron Rodgers, who was not listed on the injury report for the first time since Week 5, must use his legs to create opportunities for his WRs to get open in the passing game. The Seahawks’ defense also allows over 130 rushing yards per game, and it should be an opportunity for the running backs to take advantage.
Geno Smith has thrown 12 interceptions in 11 games, the most in the league. The Jets defense will need to pressure Smith so he forces the ball into coverage. Gang Green is seventh in the league in sacks with 34. However, Seattle is second in passing yards per game (257.2). If the Jets cannot consistently pressure Smith, it could be another long day for their secondary. Although they are second in passing yards allowed (174.9), the Jets’ defense has taken a step back since Jeff Ulbrich became interim coach. In their last six games, the Jets have allowed over 26 points per game.
The Seahawks are 28th in the league in rushing, but they will likely plan to run the ball more this week. The Jets have had tackling issues in losses to the Cardinals and Colts in recent weeks and are allowing 130.1 rushing yards per game.
Seattle has two talented running backs Kenneth Walker III and Zach Chabonnet, who can take pressure off Smith. The Jets allowed just 91 yards on the ground against the Colts in Week 11, but they allowed Anthony Richardson to score two key TDs, including the game-winning score with 46 seconds left. Smith isn’t known for his mobility, but he averages 5.2 rushing yards per attempt.
